With the ever extravagant Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala taking place on 5 May, we cannot wait for our annual kick of red carpet glitz and glam. Year after year, as gowns get bigger and bolder, we are set to see dazzling sights and drab disasters, but as we get ready to see celeb choices for the 2015 event themed “China: Through the Looking Glass”, let’s have a look at some of our top most iconic MET Gala looks from over the years.

Beyoncé in Givenchy
Beyoncé made her grand entrance in this plunging neckline beaded detail floor-sweeping Givenchy and took our breath away.
Beyoncé-Knowles
Beyoncé (again!) in Givenchy (again!)
Not quite content with stealing the spotlight in 2011, Bey showed up fashionably late in 2012 in her show-stopping feathered, beaded Givenchy gown and wowed us all.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Oscar de la Renta
SJP was definitely the belle of the ball at the 2014 MET Gala having her Carrie Bradshaw moment in this impeccable Oscar de la Renta gown. What’s more it boasted the late designer’s moniker on the tail. Swoon.

Rihanna in Stella McCartney
Rihanna kept it minimalist classy in a white Stella skirt and crop top with cut-out back.
Zoe-Saldana
Zoe Saldana in Calvin Klein
Easy did it for Zoe Saldana as she made a minimalist statement on the red carpet in this one-shoulder Calvin Klein column dress.

Sarah Jessica Parker (again!) in Alexander McQueen
Who else can pull off a mismatched tulle dress with tartan layering but SJP? The Costume Institute Gala 2006 celebrated the opening of the Anglomania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion exhibition at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the actress chose a British designer and attended the gala with none other than the late Alexander McQueen.

Solange in Dries Van Noten
Only Solange can rock print in a sea of block colour gowns and totally own it, as she did at the 2011 MET Gala.
karolina-kurkova
Karolina Kurkova in Rachel Zoe
The supermodel looked like a golden goddess at the 2012 gala in this custom-made long-sleeved gold sequin gown with matching turban and clutch by Rachel Zoe.
naomie-harris-metgala2013
Naomie Harris in Donna Karan Atelier
In this deep indigo Donna Karan Atelier gown, Naomie Harris looked every inch the Bond Girl at the 2013 MET Gala.
 Eva-Longoria
Eva Longoria in Marchesa
The petite actress was one of the stars who stole the show in 2008 with this purple pleat detail gown.
Thandie-Newton
Thandie Newton in Gucci
A minimalist golden Gucci gown on the flawless Thandie Newton? It meant perfection at the 2006 MET Gala.
2010-alexa-chung-phillip-lim
Alexa Chung in Phillip Lim
Never one for the ordinary, for the 2010 event themed ‘American Women: Fashioning a National Identity’ Chung opted for an androgynous look in Phillip Lim.
Kate-Moss
Kate Moss in Burberry
Another celeb to go against the grain and get away with it time after time is British top model Kate Moss. She proved this in 2006 when she wore this chic Burberry pant suit to a dress-heavy gala and still emerged as one of the best dressed.
Iman
Iman in Stella McCartney
The iconic supermodel served up some sexy 70s siren with this show-stopping jumpsuit in gold sequins.
christina-ricci-2011
Christina Ricci in Zac Posen
Ricci took us back to the days of Adams Family with this suitably Gothic Zac Posen gown to celebrate McQueen’s Savage Beauty in 2011.
Chanel-Iman
Chanel Iman in Topshop
Slinky silver dress? Check. Retro glam curls? Check. Model pose? Check. Chanel Iman brought old school glam to the 2014 red carpet in – wait for it! – Topshop.
Sofia-Vergara
Sofia Vergara in Marchesa
The sexy star of Modern Family looked demure in this structured Marchesa gown at the 2012 MET Gala.
Liya-Kebede
Liya Kebede in Alberta Ferretti
‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’ was the theme of the 2013 gala and model Kebede chose this Alberta Feretti dress with apt asymmetrical stripes for a touch of couture punk.
janelle-monae-metgala2014
Janelle Monae in Tadashi Shoji
The diminutive songstress may not look much different than on any other day with her choice of a monochrome, androgynous look by Tadashi Shoji at the 2014 MET Gala but this crimson cape ups the ante and makes all the difference.
sarah-jessica-parker-giles
Sarah Jessica Parker (once again!) in Giles
At the 2013 MET Gala themed “Punk: Chaos to Couture”, SJP managed to turn chaos to couture in this showstopper number by Giles Deacon paired with Louboutin tartan boots. Not content with her statement dress and heels, she also donned a Mohican-style Philip Treacy couture hat. And just like that, an outfit that may look ridiculous on anyone else, turns to pure MET Gala gold on SJP.
